2014 Senior Dual Team for the ORCA Duals

Open to High School Seniors only

March 15, 2014

Welcome Washington Wrestling Supporters!

Nine pound weight allowance!

We are very excited to announce that Washington State has its own team specifically for High School Seniors to travel and compete against other state teams. The inaugural event for the team was in March of 2011 when they competed, and won, against California and Oregon in the ORCA Duals at Redding, CA. Last year we beat California and then the Wasington vs Oregon dual went down to the last match before Oregon won the battle and the ORCA 2012 title.  In 2013 it again went down to the last match in the Washington vs. Oregon Dual before Oregon was able to secure the title.  This year we want that title back!

This event…

  • will take place three weeks after the Mat Classic on March 15, 2014
  • will be held in Ashland, OR at Southern Oregon University
  • We will also be spending two evenings/night at Southern Oregon University(SOU)
  • will help prepare our wrestlers for national tournaments including the NHSCA Senior Nationals which occur later
  • will showcase our wrestlers to scouts and college coaches
  • will provide a positive atmosphere that includes team building and sportsmanship

A selection committee will be responsible for choosing a high school Senior wrestler from any size classification for every weight class. A runner-up and alternate wrestler will also be chosen. The wrestler’s respective High School Coach, Club Coach or parent may accompany their athlete to this event and be in their corner although they will be on their own for getting there and covering their costs. Each chosen wrestler is responsible for their own training and weight management. There may also be meetings or practices prior to the event. The team will wrestle a dual with both California and Oregon.

We are accepting donations and are looking for continued sponsorship to help with the many costs but each wrestler will be financially responsible for their food, lodging and fuel. What ever funds we can raise will be used to reduce the costs of the wrestlers. Our goal it to have a relatively inexpensive trip that will allow the best wrestles we have to go. Last year the trip cost each wrestler $50 and this year the cast will stay the same.

We have secured donated singlets to be used annually by the team and event T-shirts are supplied each year. We will plan on leaving Friday morning (March 14, 2014) in personal vehicles and are heading to Ashland, OR where we will stay on Friday night. The next day we will compete in two duals and will stay over night in that town again. The return date is Sunday March 16, 2013.  Last year we had six vehicles drive down from various location in Western and Eastern Washington and pick up wrestlers on the way. We will be arranging host homes or staying with the coaches the night before leaving so we know we are ready to go in the early morning. We also will have one Southern pick up point on I-5 for those that are south of Olympia.

What we need now is for coaches/parents/wrestlers to get an email sent to Dave Gilbertson with there intent to wrestle for the team.  We will put together our list of applicants and chose the team shortly after the Mat Classic.  Email Dave Gilbertson

What I am asking for now if for people to help us fund this with individual donations. I have set up a PayPal online payment service that will allow people to donate to the team by credit card. We will need to cover the insurance costs, gas costs, housing costs and other incidentals. We have the opportunity to compete at a high level event with only minimal costs to the wrestlers and they will only have to miss one day of school. The more funds we can raise through the PayPal link, or direct payments by check, the less we will have to charge the wrestlers. We would like to keep the costs to the wrestlers to $50 but to do that we will need to raise about $1500 dollars to make sure everything is covered. This is where we are asking the wrestling community to step up and help us out. Each of the three committee members will be volunteering their time to arrange and get the team to the event. We need to cover the rooming expenses for the entire team and coaches. All individuals will buy their own food on the trip. There are three ways you can help:

1. Donate $10-49 (or more) by using the following PayPal service. Just press the button and it will take you to a spot where you can enter your name and credit card information to make a secure donation to help offset the team expenses.

2. Buy an advertisement for your company that will be listed specifically on this particular page. The paid adv will list our commercial sponsors and will be a legitimate business expense to those that purchase an advertisement. Contact me directly to ask about how to do the advertisement.

Supporter Level

3. Apply to be a coach/driver for the team. We will be needing 4-6 SUV type vehicles to carry the wrestlers and coaches to Ashland. Volunteering to drive your vehicle with 4 wrestlers is a big help and all the gas is paid for by the team. Contact Dave Gilbertson if you would like to apply for that activity.

All help is appreciated and needed. I also need interested wrestlers to send in their contact information to me as soon as soon as possible. My contact info is listed below. I have a number of wrestlers that have already expressed an interest and we will be needing to put together our team by mid February. We will be selecting our 14 wrestlers after Mat Classic and then asking them to make a payment to secure their spot. We will also be selecting a first and second alternate that will need to be ready to go on short notice if something happens to the first or second choice. This is a great opportunity to wrestle the top wrestlers from Oregon and California in a prestigious event. It will also serve as a great warm-up for those planning on competing at Senior Nationals three weeks later.

We will continue to update this site as more info becomes available. We would love to hear any ideas or suggestions that would help promote this amazing opportunity. Please contact us directly at: Dave Gilbertson email

Here is the link to the OR vs CA Duals web site from last year:  Link

The selection committee is currently comprised of Manny Brown, Dave Gilbertson and Greg Michalski .

Wrestlers apply directly to me by my email listed above.

Gary A Peterson  RIP 2014

Peterson-gary-rip

Gary A Peterson, age 61, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2014 from complications due to Ataxia. Gary was born October 18, 1952 to Ken and Clara Peterson in Bellingham, where he lived his entire life. Gary graduated from BellinghamHigh School in 1972 and then graduated from Bellingham Tech as a heavy duty mechanic. After graduation he started with the BellinghamSchool District as a bus mechanic and retired after 30 years. Gary loved his Harley Davidson motorcycles, snow skiing with his family and friends, hunting with his buddies, and traveling with his wife and sons to sporting activities and camping. He also helped coach Sons of Thunder wrestling and soccer for his boys. Gary was happiest at LummiIsland with family and friends, manning the BBQ, boating, crabbing, or sitting by the fire. He was truly at peace there. Later in years he enjoyed making wooden cars for Toys for God’s Kids, which were sent all over the world. Gary was preceded in death by his father Kenneth Gordon and his sister Dixie Ann. He is survived by his mother Clara, his wife of 38 years, Cheryll, and their three sons Travis (Rina and their son Gou), Tyson (Angie and their children Naomi and Emmett), and Trent (Layla his dog), his brother Ken (Kris), along with many nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, cousins and wonderful friends. Gary’s love of life and family, his dignity, and his sense of humor in spite of his physical difficulties touched and inspired many people he encountered. Washington Four-Time High School State Placers

8/23/2005:   I have compiled a list of 4X HS state medalist. Here is what I have so far. I don’t have time to look up who the 4x placers were, and the specifics, but I will continue to add to the list from the info given to me by other people. Please EMAIL me the full name, school, division, years covered by placings and what the placing was each year. The EXACT format I need for the information is shown below. If everyone that knows someone from the list will do a little work (type up the info in the correct format and email it to me) then we can have an accurate history for people to use. Please follow the format. What I did below was from memory so I may need some corrective info such as years or placings on those guys. Thanks for any help on this project.  Email Dave Gilbertson if you have updates or corrections to this list.

Before around 1996 there was no 4A so 3A guys before that were from the big schools.

It is now time to get the financial commitments from those that want to be a part of the 2012 Washington Senior Dual Team for the ORCA Duals in Oregon on March 15, 2014.  We have had some really top kids apply and we have high hopes of having a great team again this year.  We are excited to have you (or your wrestler if you are the coach or parent) wanting to be part of the team.  We need to get the payment using a credit card by Monday March 3rd.  Please reply to this email and send me the information listed at the bottom (if you have not already done so).  At this time we will be asking those wrestlers that are serious about this to make a $50 payment to the team to secure a spot in the selection process.  We need to get information ASAP so we know who is committed and we can start dialing in who is going to be on the team and who will be the 1st and 2nd alternate.  If you have any questions at all, feel free to contact me by email or phone.  Email Dave Gilbertson

Use PayPal or Credit Card – Your option is on the right (Don’t have a PayPal account?) after you press the Pay Now button.

We are proud to announce the roster to represent Washington in the ORCA Duals in Ashland, OR on 3/15/14. The sad part is we are not able to take everyone that applied for a spot. We would like to thank them all for applying for the team to get us a good field of choices to fill out the team. Congratulations to the 2014 Washington Senior All-Star Team:

Officials The Unsung Heroes of Wrestling

Volunteers play an important role in the growth and success of the sport of wrestling. There are countless coaches and parents across the country going the extra mile to make the wrestling experience great. But there is one other important group that is often overlooked—and underappreciated—for the work they do: The wrestling referee.

Wrestling referees are the unsung heroes of the sport. They do the work that most don’t want to do—often for little or no pay—yet are the first to be criticized. Through it all, they keep coming back, putting in their time and pouring their heart and soul into a sport they love.

But it’s not always easy.

Fred Engh is the founder and president of the National Alliance for Youth Sports, a leading advocate for positive and safe sports and activities for children located in West Palm Beach, Fla. Engh wrestled at the University of Maryland and had seven children, including three that wrestled while growing up in Salisbury, Md.

Years ago, Engh stepped on the mat as a volunteer official for a high school match in his hometown. And unfortunately that experience was such a bad one, Engh never wanted to do it again.

“I was there doing the school a favor, but the fans and opposing coach and team didn’t think so,” recalls Engh.

“Parents sometimes need to stop and imagine themselves out there. Perhaps then they will have better appreciation for volunteers who officiate.” – Fred Engh, founder and president of the National Alliance for Youth Sports

From the first match on, the jeers, complaints, and crowd yelling insults at him seemed to be all Engh heard that night. It escalated even further when the coach of the opposing team ran out on the mat after he made a call and accused Engh of fixing the match for the home team.

“That was the last match I refereed and from that day on I have had great admiration and appreciation for anyone who volunteers to officiate in youth sports—no matter what the sport, says Engh.”

Respect and admiration, along with support, is what officials deserve, says Engh. “Every sports official I know is honest, hard working, and dedicated to the sports they officiate,” he notes. “Parents sometimes need to stop and imagine themselves out there. Perhaps then they will have better appreciation for volunteers who officiate.”

They are folks like Toska Adams. She first became interested in wrestling when her son competed in middle school. Now, 18 years later, Adams, an elementary school teacher in Kentucky, serves as head official of Kentucky USA Wrestling, the Director of Women’s Officials for USA Wrestling’s Cadet and Junior Nationals, and is a top women’s college wrestling official. There’s Casey Brennan-Goessl of Osceola, Wisc. He’s a husband, a father, and a business owner. He tagged along with his dad, also a wrestling official, as a kid and now is an Olympic-caliber level official who has traveled the world because of the sport. And alsoTom Kuisle, a former high school teacher from Kellogg, Minn., who spent 35 years as a coach and has also become one of the most respected freestyle and Greco-Roman officials in the United States.

“Officials make mistakes, it’s going to happen,” acknowledges Kuisle. Those are often words overzealous coaches and parents don’t think officials will ever say. The truth be told, the wrestling official hates it just as much when calls are missed too.

“We are not there to make a kid lose,” Adams points out. “We are there to keep the wrestler safe and we want the wrestlers to decide the match. Officials don’t try to cheat kids out of winning. We learn from our mistakes and try to get better as much as we can.”

For the past 10 years Kuisle has worked closely with USA Wrestling to educate new and experienced officials on how to diffuse conflict and confrontation during a match.

What he tells coaches is this: He respects any coach who challenges or asks questions about a call, and if done in a polite manner, it is only going to foster a better and more productive discussion. The nature of wrestling is confrontation and conflict, says Kuisle. In an intense, physical sport, people are going to get upset if they feel a call was missed. All officials understand this.

“But parents and coaches need to remember they are role models,” says Kuisle. “When parents shout out from the crowd or a coach stomps around on a mat, kids see this and think this is the best way to solve conflict. That is not teaching kids anything positive.”

Any good official will admit they miss calls, says Brennan-Goessl. But until one steps on the mat and works as a referee, one will never know what the official is actually dealing with. “Things happen so fast in wrestling, calls are going to be missed,” he says. “We strive to do our best. When coaches or parents act up, it puts even more pressure on the kid because they see that and it can take their focus away from concentrating on the match. It does have an adverse affect.”

Adams has overcome stereotypes that women can’t become good officials or understand the sport. She’s now a willing mentor who helps other women aspire to become officials get into the sport. She never wrestled—girls weren’t allowed to when she was growing up—but she has put in the time and dedication needed to overcome any obstacles.

“I was lucky that, early on, several key people took interest in me,” says Adams. “But being a female I always felt I had to be better to be equal. That’s the way I looked at it.”It also helps to have thick skin, she says.”People are going to try and ruffle your feathers and make you mad. If you go into with determination and passion to learn and get better, you can succeed. I love it.”

In every city and every state, there are officials making a positive impact on the sport. There’s Mike Hagerty in Missouri, a teacher by day, but an official who also volunteers as a member of USA Wrestling’s Coaches Council. Chad Olson is a banker in Wisconsin, and he juggles times where he has to officiate matches coached by his brother at a local high school. John Heyman is a retired IT business analyst from Florida who has made an impact officiating high school wrestling on a state level and nationally and internationally as a freestyle and Greco-Roman official and mentor. Zach Errett, a former high school wrestling and football coach, now is an athletic director at Mooresville High School in Indiana, and one of the best freestyle and Greco-Roman officials in the world. The list goes on.

All people with regular jobs, doing the extraordinary job of volunteering their time as an official.

“I think at the end of the day it’s important for parents and coaches to remember that wrestling is a sport and sports are supposed to be fun,” says Brennan-Goessl. “We all play a role in making that happen.”

The next time you’re at a wrestling match and get frustrated, upset, or question a call, keep this thought in mind, says Engh:

“What if no one volunteered to be an official? What then?
